If you want to know how consumerism, video, and self-identity collide, watch the following:

Her identity is a product of her consumer choices. She wants you to know her by her purchases. It's got to be the most self-validating exercise I've witnessed so boldly pronounced since watching this

Any thoughts?

Not trying to get too philosophical or anything, but I believe all humans are selfish or at least has a ego that likes to be stroked, and with the "creation of the Internet" by Al Gore we have a medium that fulfills people's inner desires to be liked, loved, adored. Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, etc they all stroke the ego... I mean seriously do people really care if your friend walked her dog and the dog pooped and your friend did not pick it up with a doggy bag? but do people care if Britney Spears walked her dog and the dog pooped and she did not pick it up? Of course! (Well maybe not YOU personally, but enough people care hence the boom in the paparazzi business...ahem TMZ).
ReplyDeleteI think the girl in the video wants to be a star... I am not sure if she necessarily was thinking even that deep when she made the video about her fashion choices. I mean there has been a lot of youtube stars that have come about offering up advice about health and beauty... Plus if a lot of people watch your youtube videos you can make a good sum of money from the youtube partnership program.
I think perhaps the scary thing is the breakdown of standards in our society.
